Built-In Wood Fireplace FAQs

Please reach us at brian@heartlinestoves.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

A built-in wood fireplace is a factory-built heating appliance installed within a framed wall and finished with approved materials such as stone, brick or tile. Unlike a traditional open fireplace, a high-efficiency model uses a sealed firebox and controlled combustion to provide both the beauty of a wood fire and meaningful heat.

A wood insert is installed inside an existing masonry fireplace opening. A built-in fireplace is installed as part of the wall system with its own approved chimney, framing and finishing requirements. Built-in fireplaces are ideal for new construction, additions and major renovations where no usable fireplace currently exists.

A zero-clearance fireplace is factory-built and safety-listed for installation within framed construction when the manufacturer’s requirements are followed. It does not mean that every part of the fireplace can touch combustible materials. The specified clearances for framing, chimney components, mantels and finishing materials must always be maintained.

In many cases, yes. A built-in fireplace can be added during a renovation or addition if there is sufficient space for the appliance, chimney, hearth and required clearances. Heart Line can evaluate your home and help determine whether the location is suitable.

Yes, depending on the model and your home’s layout. Some fireplaces offer optional gravity vents, blowers or heat-distribution systems that can move warmth to nearby rooms or other floors. Heating performance also depends on insulation, ceiling height, climate and the quality of the firewood.

The fireplace can generally continue producing radiant heat without electricity. However, optional blowers and powered heat-distribution systems will not operate during a power outage. Always check the owner’s manual for the requirements of your specific model.

Ash and glass should be cleaned regularly throughout the heating season. The fireplace and chimney should be professionally inspected at least once a year and cleaned as needed based on use and buildup. Catalytic models may require additional maintenance outlined in the owner’s manual.

Yes. Heart Line Stove Shop provides product guidance, professional installation and ongoing maintenance and repair for the fireplaces we sell. We can help plan the appliance placement, chimney system and clearance requirements while coordinating important specifications with your builder or remodeling contractor.
