Wood Fireplace FAQ

Please reach us at brian@heartlinestoves.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

A wood insert is designed to fit inside an existing masonry fireplace, transforming an older, drafty fireplace into a more efficient source of heat. A built-in wood fireplace is installed within a framed wall and is generally intended for new construction, additions or major remodeling projects. Heart Line can help determine which option is appropriate for your home.

That depends on the fireplace’s opening dimensions, firebox depth, chimney condition and construction. Masonry fireplaces are commonly suitable for inserts, while a factory-built fireplace can only accept an insert specifically approved for that application. Heart Line will evaluate your fireplace and help you select a properly sized model.

A properly sized insert can heat a substantial portion of many homes. Actual performance depends on the appliance, floor plan, insulation, ceiling height, wood quality and outdoor temperature. Open layouts allow heat to circulate more easily, while closed-off rooms may require supplemental heat. Some built-in fireplaces also offer optional systems for distributing heat to additional rooms.

The wood fire itself generally does not require electricity, allowing many models to continue producing radiant heat during a power outage. However, blowers and optional heat-distribution systems require electricity and will stop operating when the power is out. Always follow the instructions for your specific model.

Burn only properly seasoned, untreated firewood with a moisture content of approximately 20% or less. Dry wood lights more easily, produces more usable heat and creates less smoke and creosote. Never burn painted or pressure-treated lumber, construction debris, household trash or other prohibited materials. answer to this item.

Your chimney, liner and wood-burning appliance should be professionally inspected at least once each year and cleaned whenever buildup is present. Cleaning frequency depends on how often you burn, the quality and moisture content of your firewood and the way the appliance is operated. Ashes should also be removed regularly according to the owner’s manual.
